Survey Crew Chief
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is the leader of the survey staff on the job site. Responsible for directing and supervising survey crew, ensuring safe work practices and interaction with contractors and clients. Receives day-to-day direction from Survey Manager(s) and/or Land Surveyor(s).
Responsibilities
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Directs, manages and participates in the field production of topographic and boundary surveys as well as other survey tasks.
- Serves as safety liaison in field with oversight to ensure staff perform duties in safe and effective manner.
- Responsible for daily direction and mentorship of survey team.
- Maintains and operates GPS and conventional surveying instruments.
- Writes and organizes field notes.
- Reads construction plans to ensure accurate area to be surveyed.
- Calculates and executes field layout with proper procedures and positioning.
- Provides performance information on all project team members to the survey manager or project manager.
- Works directly with both internal and external clients and contractors as directed.
- Operates company vehicles, and is responsible for company vehicle(s) and equipment on project site. Ensures all equipment has been accounted for and properly stored at conclusion of work day.
Qualifications

- Extensive survey knowledge related to field process, equipment, and techniques
- Highly motivated with effective communication skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to lead, manage, train, and mentor others
- Ability and aptitude to interpret and understand plans and specifications
- Exhibits initiative, responsibility, flexibility and leadership
- Team oriented and ability to get along with others
- Advanced math skills including trigonometry
- Proficiency in MS Office and technical software
- Effective problem-solving and decision making skills
- Ability to pass safety classes (including CPR and First Aid) and exhibit safety oriented mentality
- Strong organizational skills
- Knowledge and/or experience in survey software/CAD software and Trimble Business Center
- Ability to embrace new technologies and processes
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Two-year technical degree from accredited engineering/surveying curriculum preferred.
Experience:
3+ years surveying experience required. Experience leading survey crews preferred. Working knowledge in MS Office and technical software preferred. LSI or ability to obtain within 2 years preferred. CPR/First Aid certified or ability to obtain certification required.
Travel Expectations:
Some overnight travel is required. Survey Crew Chief travels in company vehicle to project site, staying near project site during the work week, as necessary, with expenses paid. Depending on base location of employee and/or project work, position may travel up to 50% of the time. Valid driver’s license with good driving record required.
Other Information:
This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing under the authority of the Federal Railroad Administration. The selected candidate will be required to pass a DOT FRA drug test as a condition of employment in this position. An applicant with a confirmed positive test result in the past (or the equivalent) that has not successfully completed all rehabilitation program requirements and follow-up testing requirements is not eligible for this position.
The selected applicant will also be required to complete a background check including a Department of Motor Vehicle report.
Working Conditions:
- Lifting: Occasional maximum lift of 80 lbs. from floor to waist; occasional maximum carry of 40 lbs, 200 feet; frequent maximum carry of 20 lbs. up to 1 mile; occasional maximum vertical push force of 100 lbs.
- Work is primarily outside and will have exposure to extreme weather conditions and nature elements. Will need appropriate clothing for extreme weather conditions.
- Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, crawl and balance for extended periods of time.
- Position will have extensive walking.
- Must be able to navigate difficult terrain, including un-even surfaces, ditches, steep slopes, etc.
- Must be able to use hands for carrying items, operating devices and/or equipment, and operating ATV vehicle.
- Must be able to lift/carry items (i.e. chainsaws, generators, sledgehammers, jackhammers, hand tools, etc.)
