Position Summary: The Communications Director creates and executes on messaging strategy for Empower Missouri in service of passing anti-poverty policy across the state. The person in this role must be an incredibly strong writer and storyteller who is able to create clear and compelling narratives about the realities of poverty in Missouri.  The Communication Director will be responsible for all online and print communications, including social media, op-eds, letters to the editor, and organizational publications, as well as serving as a liaison with traditional media. This role supports multiple issue-based campaigns throughout the year to raise the profile of key policy initiatives and will be an integral member of the organization’s growing leadership team.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee organizational messaging strategy in order to ensure standard and consistent use of core messaging principles in all public communications.
  • Support Policy & Advocacy Staff in creating issue- and policy-related campaign messaging for various campaigns each year.  Develop one-pagers, briefing memos, sign-on letters, and social media posts to support outreach and organizing work.
  • Develop and implement a social media plan to significantly expand online presence through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other channels as deemed appropriate.
  • Support Policy & Advocacy Staff in creation of a weekly podcast during the legislative session.
  • Manage all online communications including a weekly newsletter, organizational blog, and website(s).
  • Create event promotional plans to maximize event awareness including a promotional package to be shared with various stakeholder groups.
  • Lead strategy & execution for outreach to print and other traditional media, coordinating press conferences, pitching stories, and highlighting actions of the organization and allies.
  • Partner with Policy & Advocacy Staff to improve the visibility of Empower Missouri’s coalitions.
  • Manage and keep current organizational websites and all web content, including potential micro-sites for campaign specific efforts.
  • Update Empower Missouri print collateral (brochure, organizational one-pages, case statement, etc.) periodically to ensure accuracy and alignment with evolving core messaging.
  • Write organization’s annual report, and support Development Manager with fundraising communication as needed.
  • Support Policy & Advocacy Staff in creation of written testimony on legislative issues as needed.
  • Create images, graphics, and infographics for use on various campaigns.
  • Produce branded merchandise as needed
  • Occasionally serve as spokesperson for the organization
  • Perform other duties as requested

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extremely strong writing skills required.
  • Keen ability to identify and understand key audiences and their motivations as well as target messaging to those audiences
  • Creative and innovative thinker
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional time management skills and ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Significant experience with social media; demonstrated experience growing social media followers preferred
  • Basic graphic design skills required
  • Word Press experience preferred
  • Leadership qualities and the ability to mobilize others to action

Desired Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of experience in a similar role with a nonprofit organization; 6-10 years of experience is preferred.
  • Prior experience working on issue-related campaigns preferred
  • Empower Missouri is open to a wide range of educational and professional backgrounds.
  • Competency, passion, and experience are more important than formal education, although we certainly welcome those with formal education credentials to apply.

Salary Range and Benefits: $55,000-$65,000 starting salary with annual opportunities for merit-based and cost-of-living raises; health, life, dental and vision insurance; generous PTO policy, paid holidays, and retirement plan

Location of Position: This position can be based anywhere in Missouri, with anticipated 10% travel in-state, primarily to Jefferson City.
