Summary: The Communications Manager is responsible for creating, editing, and coordinating content for the Missouri Municipal League’s communication channels, including the bi-monthly MML Review magazine, bi-weekly online newsletter, social media, member educational materials and member/stakeholder marketing materials. This position coordinates outreach with publication advertisers, sponsors, participating affiliates and associates, as well as promotion of MML resources and training/networking events.
This position features variety, room for creativity across all communication channels, autonomous decision-making authority, and the opportunity to build relationships statewide with local government officials and a wide variety of stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate, edit and proof articles, features, member news and updates for the organization’s publications, including the bi-monthly MML Review magazine, bi-weekly online newsletter, social media and member resources.
- Write and edit president’s and director’s column for MML Review, press releases, social media posts, event descriptions, marketing language, talking points regarding proposed state legislation, member news articles and other materials as needed.
- Recruit advertisers for the MML Review magazine, MML Participating Affiliates and Associates (corporate and non-profit members) as well as event and yearlong sponsors.
- Develop marketing and communication strategies for MML member events, including the MML Annual Conference, Elected Officials Training and Legislative Conference.
- Serve as lead project manager to coordinate sponsor and affiliate marketing materials and ensure sponsor/affiliate benefits are fulfilled.
- Manage part-time remote MML graphic designer to ensure MML communication materials are consistent and reflect the organization’s strategic vision.
- Serve as lead contact for MML Public Information Officer Advisory Group, coordinating new networking and training opportunities for MML PIOs across Missouri, including quarterly webinars, an annual event and listserv.
- Serve as first point of contact to media and facilitate appropriate staff response to inquiries in a timely manner.
- Assist deputy director to advocate on behalf of the company brand with external stakeholders and the media across all communication channels.
- Represent MML at conferences, seminars, and speaking engagements.
General supervision is received from the executive director and deputy director; however, the employee exercises independent judgment in contacts with league members, municipal officials, and the public.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or related field.
- Four to six years full-time experience in communications, public information, marketing, or related field. Digital media experience preferred.
- Ability to prioritize and successfully manage multiple projects.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills.
- Competency with Adobe Creative Cloud and proficiency with MS Office.
